'It's time to ask that certain someone out on a date.'

Daniel blinked as he looked at the message from his fortune cookie then cursed the perceptiveness of all fortune cookies.

It was a sign.

Probably the most obvious sign he'd gotten. The only thing more obvious would have been a giant sign hitting him over the head with big red letters screaming 'ASK JANET OUT YOU DOLT!' His internal debate as to whether or not to give into his growing feelings for one of his best friends and ask her out had been raging for months. First he'd noticed her smile, then her laugh, and then there were her eyes the list went on and on. He was thinking things about her that wouldn't have crossed his mind a few years ago. Daniel looked forward to seeing her everyday and was disappointed if he couldn't.

He'd taken to watching her when he thought she wasn't looking. His eyes would trace the curve of her neck and his fingers itched to brush back a stray lock of hair that slipped out of her bun. Putting his hand to the small of her back as they walked out of a room was a delicious torture.

Then there were signs that maybe his feelings were reciprocated. Janet had taken to inviting him out on Fridays if there was world-ending crisis going on at the SGC. She'd often popped down to his office and poked and prodded him into having lunch with her. Often she'd come around his desk to see what he was working on and would put her hands on his shoulders leaning forward enough so that her cheek brushed his.

Daniel shook his head. Maybe it was all in his imagination. Then he jumped as he felt her hand slide over his from across her kitchen table. He looked up.

"Is everything all right, Daniel?" She asked, her dark brown eyes radiating concern.

Daniel sighed; he hadn't expected to fall in love again. Hadn't wanted to take the chance of getting hurt if he was left behind again. He took a good look at the woman across the table then slowly turned his hand so that it cradled hers.

Perhaps...it was time to take a chance again.

"Janet? Can I ask you a question?"

The End
